For filament applications TOPOCROM® coating is provided with specific characteristics: "soft" surfaces, formation of air cushions and the guiding of fluids. This coating of filament guiding parts results in a significant improvement of process stability. It reduces breaks in filaments and splicing, while abrasion of the parts is significantly reduced. Sticking effects are avoided.

Carbon fibre processing is a challenge

Due their high strength and rigidity, carbon fibres are increasingly used in industrial products and in the consumer sector. However, the low breaking elongation makes this fibre a challenge for the production and further processing.

Problems in fibre production and roving processing

The carbon fibre (filament) has a thickness of only 5 to 7 micrometres (microns). Thousands of these fibres are bundled into a fibre bundle (roving). Unwanted faults already occur during processing in the production phase due to fibre breaks. Process interruptions can also occur during further processing of the rovings (fibre bundles), due in particular to splicing or sticking effects, but also because of breaks in the rovings. Such breaks or splicings are partly caused by unsuitable surfaces of the fibre or roving guiding parts.
